Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara
The city of Nara is older than Kyoto. It was the first permanent capital of Japan, as previously the capital moved according to wherever the Emperor was living. This was an excellent day trip from Kyoto and one I highly recommend.
東大寺
Founded in the mid 8th century, it has the world's largest wooden hall that contains a colossal statue of Buddha. As you approach the temple, you are greeted by many deers as they freely roam the temple grounds.
春日大社
Kasuga-taisha is considered one of the 'Three great Shinto shrines' of Japan. Founded in 768, it has 3000 stone and bronze lanterns. The lanterns are only lit twice a year during two Lantern Festivals, one in early February and one in mid August.
